Teaching Consent in the Second Grade

Today I had a really interesting conversation with my head of school and a few other team members about how to work with children with sensory needs to help them build an awareness of establishing consent before seeking contact with others.  A while back I posted an article about teaching consent to children in developmentally appropriate ways and today made me thing about it even more.

Certainly something I see on the day to day working with my student body and even though my boys are young I still think it’s so so important to teach them how to respect their bodies and the bodies of those around them even though right now that looks like, “ask before you hug your teacher.”  While it may seem harmless (or even adorable) to have a child just come up and hug you, I think we sometimes do our students a disservice by letting them learn this behavior and then later asking them to unlearn it.
